How to Add an Internship to Your Resume and LinkedIn
Finishing an internship is only half the job. How you present it decides whether recruiters notice it. Here is how to add your internship to your resume and LinkedIn so it communicates real value.
On your resume
Place the internship under an "Experience" or "Internships" heading, above college projects if it is your strongest item. Use this format:
- Role title, such as "Python Development Intern"
- Organisation name and mode, such as "Remote"
- Dates or duration, such as "5 weeks"
- 2 to 4 bullet points focused on what you built and achieved
A simple bullet formula
Use: action verb, what you did, how, and the result. For example:
- Built a command-line expense tracker in Python that stores data in JSON and generates monthly summaries.
- Cleaned and analysed a 10,000-row sales dataset using Pandas and presented findings in a notebook.
- Designed a mobile app prototype in Figma and revised it after reviewer feedback.
Only include numbers that are true. If you do not have a number, describe the work clearly instead.
On LinkedIn
- Add the internship under Experience with the correct title and employment type "Internship".
- Write a short description of the tasks and tools you used.
- Add the certificate under "Licenses & Certifications" with its ID and verification link.
- List the relevant skills so they appear in searches.
- Post a short update with a link to your project and what you learned.
Presenting your certificate and offer letter
Keep your offer letter and certificate as PDFs. Share the certificate ID so recruiters can verify it. ELEVATE certificates can be checked on the verification page. Never edit or alter a certificate.
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing tasks you did not do.
- Using vague lines like "worked on various projects".
- Forgetting to link your GitHub or portfolio.
- Leaving out the internship because it was "only virtual". Remote work is real work.
