Fake Internship Scams: 9 Red Flags and How to Verify
Every year students pay for "internships" that turn out to be nothing more than a PDF certificate. A little checking before you register can save you money and time. Here are nine red flags and a simple way to verify any internship.
9 red flags of a fake or low-quality internship
- You are asked to pay before you get any details, or the fee is not clearly explained.
- The company has no identifiable legal name, address or contact email.
- There is no offer letter, or the letter does not name the role, duration or organisation.
- The program promises a job or a stipend with no conditions.
- There are no tasks at all, only "pay and download the certificate".
- Nobody reviews your work.
- The certificate has no ID, QR code or any way to verify it.
- The website copies content, logos or names from other organisations.
- Contact is only through personal messaging accounts, with no official email.
Messages that should make you stop
- "Congratulations, you are selected! Pay ₹999 within 2 hours to confirm your seat."
- "Guaranteed job after the internship. Limited seats, pay now."
- "Please share the OTP you just received to complete your verification."
- "No tasks required. Pay and download your certificate today."
Pressure to pay quickly, guarantees that sound too good to be true, and requests for OTPs are classic signs of a scam. A genuine program gives you time to read its terms before you decide.
Free is not the problem, hidden fees are
Plenty of legitimate programs are free to join. Some also charge a small fee for an official certificate. That is acceptable when it is stated plainly before you register. What you should avoid is any program that hides the cost until the end or makes the fee mandatory to even begin.
How to verify an internship in five minutes
- Search the organisation name along with words like "reviews" and "complaints".
- Look for official contact details and a working email on their own domain.
- Read the terms and refund policy. Genuine programs publish them.
- Ask what the tasks are and how they are reviewed.
- Ask whether the certificate can be verified online by a third party.
How to check a company in India
- Companies and LLPs: search the name or registration number on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs portal (mca.gov.in) to see whether it is registered and active.
- MSMEs: check a Udyam registration number with the verification tool on udyamregistration.gov.in.
- GST: if the organisation shows a GSTIN on its invoices, you can look it up on the GST portal (gst.gov.in).
- Email and website: official emails should come from the organisation's own domain, and the website should list a real contact address.
Questions to ask before you join
- What is the legal name of the organisation, and can I look it up on the MCA or Udyam portal?
- What exactly is free, and what, if anything, costs money?
- What tasks will I do, and who reviews them?
- How long does the program last, and what happens if I miss a deadline?
- How can a recruiter verify my certificate?
- Who do I contact if something goes wrong, and is there a refund policy?
A genuine program answers all of these in writing, usually on its own website. If you get vague answers, pressure to decide quickly or no answers at all, walk away.
What a verifiable certificate looks like
A good certificate carries your name, the role, the duration and a unique ID, often with a QR code. Anyone, such as a recruiter or your college, should be able to enter the ID on the issuer's website and see the details. ELEVATE certificates, for instance, can be checked on the verify certificate page.
Protect yourself
- Never share OTPs, bank details or card PINs for an internship.
- Pay only through the payment channels listed on the organisation's own website, and keep the receipt.
- Use a separate email address for applications.
- Keep screenshots of offers, terms and payment confirmations.
What to do if you have already been scammed
- Stop paying. Scammers often come back asking for "one more fee".
- Collect evidence: screenshots of chats, payment receipts, UPI transaction IDs and the website address.
- Report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call the cyber crime helpline 1930 as soon as possible.
- Tell your bank or UPI app straight away so they can try to block or trace the transaction.
- Warn your classmates and your college placement cell so others do not fall for it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to pay for an internship certificate?
Some programs charge a small, clearly stated fee for an official certificate while keeping the internship itself free. The fee should be disclosed before you register, and the certificate should be verifiable.
How can an employer verify my certificate?
They enter the certificate ID, or scan its QR code, on the issuing organisation's verification page.
Are internships that use WhatsApp or Telegram fake?
Not necessarily. Many genuine programs use WhatsApp or Telegram for quick updates and support. The warning sign is when chat is the only channel, with no official website, email address or written terms.
Where can I report an internship scam in India?
Report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline 1930, and inform your bank or UPI app as soon as possible.
